What Is Edge Computing?
Edge computing runs applications closer to end users instead of in a single centralized data center. If your users are in Tokyo and your server is in New York, every request travels 10,000+ miles. Edge computing puts a server in Tokyo too.

Light travels at ~200,000 km/s in fiber optic cable. New York to Tokyo is ~11,000 km. Minimum round trip: ~110ms just for the speed of light. In practice, it's 150-200ms.

Edge Strategies for Self-Hosting
CDN for Static Assets
Put Cloudflare in front of your server. Static files (images, CSS, JS) are cached at 300+ locations worldwide. Only dynamic requests hit your origin server.
Multi-Region Deployment
Deploy your application in multiple regions. Use DNS-based routing (Cloudflare Load Balancing, AWS Route53) to direct users to the nearest instance.
Database Replication
Run read replicas near your users. Writes go to the primary database; reads are served locally.
Edge Functions
Use Cloudflare Workers for edge logic: authentication, A/B testing, redirects, and personalization. Process at the edge, fetch from origin only when needed.

The Practical Approach
For most self-hosters:
1. Deploy on one server in your primary region
2. Use Cloudflare CDN for static assets (free)
3. Only add more regions when you have global users and latency complaints
Premature edge optimization is a waste. Start simple, measure latency, and add regions only when the data justifies it.
